Take The Product Assessment

Who Owns the Future of Your Products?

If I asked you who’s responsible for closing the books each month, I imagine you’d have an answer. The same goes for meeting production schedules, engineering, or hitting sales targets.

But what if I asked who’s responsible for the future of your products?

Think about the products you’ll be selling three to five years from now. Will they be the same products you’re selling today? Will your customers have the same needs? Will your competitors be doing something different?

And who in your company is spending time thinking about these questions?

Someone needs to understand the market and customer, the product, and the business, and bring those perspectives together to help determine where your products should go next.

That’s the role of product management. It takes people across the organization to develop successful products, but one person needs to be responsible for their future direction.

It’s a question worth considering as you think about the future of your business. After all, the products you’re developing today will play an important role in the revenue you’re generating three to five years from now.
